Donald Vuchetich
Transportation and Infrastructure
Donald Vuchetich assists clients of William-Lynn-James with border management, transportation, and infrastructure issues before various government and policy groups throughout North America. He also provides assistance on matters of community outreach and transportation and infrastructure project assessment. Mr. Vuchetich has a background in working with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Canada Border Services Agency in facilitating trade across the United States-Canada border. He has worked closely with leaders both in the province of Ontario and the state of Michigan on border-crossing issues.
Prior to joining the Firm, Mr. Vuchetich was president of the Detroit & Canada Tunnel Corporation, a privately owned company that operates the Detroit Windsor Tunnel under contracts with the cities of Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario. The Detroit Windsor Tunnel is one of the busiest border crossings between the United States and Canada, carrying approximately 8 million passenger cars annually. Among the major accomplishments during his tenure at the Tunnel were reorganizing the company into a profitable entity, negotiating a long-term agreement with the City of Windsor, directing a multi-year renovation program, and assisting with the sale of the company. He served as a member of the American Plaza Port of Entry Blue Water Bridge Authority planning team.
While at the Detroit & Canada Tunnel Corporation, Mr. Vuchetich worked closely with U.S. Customs and Border Protection in helping this agency fulfill its mission statement. He directed the development and implementation of a $65 million capital-improvement program that included a number of facility and traffic pattern/flow improvements for more efficient border-crossing operations. He managed the development of a U.S. Border Patrol facility compound at the Detroit Windsor Tunnel.
While working with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, he implemented a computerized toll system that included extensive management information, accounting integration, and auditing systems. Mr. Vuchetich also implemented a traffic-monitoring system for security and vehicle tracking at the Tunnel. Under a grant from the Department of Homeland Security, he led a team to develop a pilot computerized system for pre-arrival notification of hazardous material arriving and departing in the Detroit-Windsor border-crossing corridor.
In addition to his work with the Detroit & Canada Tunnel Corporation, Mr. Vuchetich has also served as a principal in a strategic marketing and consulting firm that worked with Fortune 500 companies in implementing computer-integrated manufacturing solutions. He has also held various marketing positions in manufacturing and computer companies in North America and has a background in working in Asia.
Mr. Vuchetich received his B.A. degree from the University of Michigan in 1970. He served as a member and Chairman of the Board of the Metro Detroit Convention and Visitors Bureau from 1992 to 2001. He is a past president of the Canada U.S. Business Association and has served as secretary/treasurer of the North American Bridge Tunnel Operator's Association. He has also served as a Member of the Board of Downtown Detroit, Inc., and as a Member of the Board of the International Bridge Tunnel and Turnpike Association.
